“Hong Kong Won’t Open to World Until Mid-2022, Lam Aide Says”

- Bloomberg News Headline

Inflation and the Toy Industry, Then and Now (1990 – 1992 vs. 2018 - 2020) “The Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in hotter than expected in October, as the CPI inflation rate surged to a new 31-year high. The CPI rose 0.9% from the prior month and 6.2% vs. a year ago, the biggest gain since November 1990.

What is interesting is that the toy industry enjoyed double-digit increases in 1991 and 1992. I decided to make a comparison.

Below is the CPI for 1990 – 1992 AND 2018 – 2020. Next to it, I have included the toy industry increase in revenue as reported by NPD. I have been unable to determine if there is a direct connection between inflation and the toy industry’s double-digit gains for 1991, 1992, and 2020.

Still, with the toy industry looking at the potential for another double-digit year, the pattern replication is intriguing.
